Montreal-based artist, I am Syrian by birth and parentage. I grew up in Paris, Rome, Cairo, Lisbon, Madrid, Buenos Aires and Damascus absorbing languages and cultural experiences along the way. I have since lived in Beirut, Amman, Washington DC, Tripoli, London among other places and this has continued to enrich and influence my cosmopolitan vision. I have had a career as university professor teaching English and comparative literature, and French and Spanish language and literature, and as writer and free-lance translator. My work generally seeks to capture the essence of a nameless sensation evoked by certain sounds, or smells, or sights, or touch. Drawing on memories of the richness of the evoked moments, I would like to think that my drawings and paintings communicate the intensity of my response to these reminders of past experiences, whether lived or imagined, in a way that is both suggestive and vaguely reminiscent of what is felt rather than expressed. I am never without a sketchbook and almost everything I see amuses and delights me, and is a possible source for the narratives I create. As my head fills with words and images, I often pen/draw them into my private little notebook/sketchbook I keep especially for my pictorial narratives of an emotive nature. My miniscule watercolours and pen-and- ink or pencil drawings, held together by a narrative, may eventually lead to larger works.
